MUDCONTROL

RECOMMENDS THE USE OF QUARRIED SHARP SAND OR WASHED FINE/SOFT SAND WHEN SLABS ARE FOR ANIMAL USE

Which sand should you be using on top of your Mudcontrol Slabs in a livestock setting?

Answer - Washed Fine/Soft Sand or Quarried Sharp Sand

A sand topping should ALWAYS be laid on top of our slabs and we usually recommend either washed soft/fine sand, or sharp sand.  We have used both here on our trial/demo area for years without problems.  We had already been warned against "builder's sand" because it can contain pulverised bricks, and sometimes glass - obviously very dangerous.

However, we have been contacted by a customer who has passed further information on to us.

Please heed this warning too when ordering your sand:

"So I was enquiring with a local builders merchant over the price of sand and mentioned I'd found broken glass in a previous delivery from one of their competitors.  Apparently this isn't dodgy' (as I'd thought) in fact it's perfectly legal and positively encouraged by some local authorities because it saves the glass going into landfill.  I was quite shocked TBH but then, recycled sharp sand would normally be used under slabs, or under a shed.  The advice he gave me was to avoid recycled sand and double check what you are buying if it's going to come into contact with horses.  The only way to avoid broken glass or other 'additives' was to buy quarried sharp sand which has pretty much come straight out of the ground."

So, when not buying washed soft/fine sand please specify Quarried (NOT recycled) Sharp Sand and explain that it is going to be used as footing for animals.

Thank you.
